Efficiency at the core of design

Scope:
The existing STARR application, used for supply requisition and receipting, was built on an outdated platform with an unintuitive interface and no consistent branding. A redesign was required for a new React Native build. I was brought in to reimagine the user experience and apply Oracle Redwood branding alongside legacy elements, ensuring both modernisation and continuity with the existing product.

Actions:
I redesigned the app using my mobile design system and pattern library, aligning it with both NSW Health’s expression language and Oracle Redwood branding. I streamlined and simplified complex user flows, cleaned and modernised the user interface, and restructured the experience around efficiency and clarity. I also extended the design to support future AI integration for predictive stock management – particularly important in healthcare, where many supplies have short shelf lives. Throughout the project, I oversaw the implementation of the new designs, ensuring a high level of consistency between design intent and final product.

Results:
The new mobile version of STARR allows NSW Health staff to manage supply requisitions and automatically confirm deliveries quickly and efficiently. By significantly reducing manual processes and errors, the updated system has contributed to substantial operational savings – estimated at millions of taxpayer dollars per month. The redesign also laid a scalable foundation for smarter, AI-driven supply management in the future.
