Real-Time Medical Supply Tracking
Scope:
NSW Health needed a real-time, mobile solution for tracking medical supply usage in clinical settings. The existing web portal required staff to manually gather and scan barcodes at desktop stations, which was inefficient and error-prone – particularly in fast-paced environments like operating theatres and emergency rooms. I was engaged to design a mobile app that extended the portal’s functionality and enabled seamless, on-the-go usage.
Actions
I designed and developed the app from the ground up to operate seamlessly in clinical settings. The new interface featured advanced mobile scanning capabilities and intuitive item management tools that allowed staff to track and log supply usage in real time. The app was designed with a clean, touch-friendly UI optimised for mobile workflows, and structured to work as a primary tool to the existing system. I also ensured it aligned with NSW Health’s design standards and accessibility requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA), while simplifying tasks through user-friendly navigation and logical user flows.
Results:
The application enabled efficient, accurate tracking of medical supplies across operating theatres, emergency departments, and general wards. It dramatically reduced manual data entry and errors, allowing clinical staff to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks. By eliminating the need for fixed-location scanners and manual barcode gathering, the tool significantly streamlined the ordering process, paving the way for more responsive stock management in time-critical environments saving millions of dollars in taxpayers money.
